The NL Central has been the best division in the majors all season long, and now they’ll be sending three teams to the postseason. The top two teams in the Central, St. Louis and Pittsburgh, meet for the final time in the regular season on Wednesday at PNC Park.
The Cardinals will send out Tyler Lyons, who is making his first start since September 2, but he has made a few appearances from the bullpen as of late. He has seen the Pirates three times this season, once from a starting spot, and Lyons has posted a 2.53 ERA in 10.2 innings of work.
The Pirates counter with 18-game winner Gerrit Cole, who won’t win the Cy Young, but has finally fulfilled the potential that Pittsburgh saw in him as a No. 1 overall pick in 2011. This will be his fourth start of the season against the Cardinals and so far, Cole is 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA. At home in 2015, Cole is 8-3 in 14 starts with an ERA of 2.85 and he’d love to add a win to that record in his final regular season home start.
