Sale has not performed at his usual level this year, breaking a string of seven consecutive All-Star appearances. He’s giving up a career-high 1.31 home runs per nine innings, over twice as many as last year’s 0.63. the Red Sox are only 8-13 in his 21 starts thus far, including a pair of losses at Yankee Stadium. However, Sale has also pitched better than his ERA would suggest, and he’s coming off back-to-back quality starts over Toronto and Tampa Bay.

Recent results haven’t been nearly as kind to German. The Yankees are still 13-3 behind their second-year starter, but it was their bats who came through in Tuesday’s 14-12 win over Minnesota – who dropped eight earned runs on German in just 3.2 innings of work. Catcher Gary Sanchez (.807 OPS) strained his left groin in that game and was placed on the 10-day injured list.
