This Thursday, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Minnesota Wild will kick off 2019 with an afternoon game in Toronto. The Wild are reeling after a hot start to the season and have managed to win just four games in their last 15 (4-10-1). The Leafs, meanwhile, have won five of their last six games and sit second in the Eastern Conference with 54 points on the season.

The Leafs have dominated teams in the offensive zone all season. Mitch Marner and John Tavares, who make up two-thirds of the Leafs’ first line, have a combined 97 points on the season and give opposing teams fits in their own end on a nightly basis. That dominance has catapulted the Leafs to the second-best offense in the NHL, which averages 3.69 goals scored per game.

In contrast, the Wild’s offense is in the bottom half of the league, averaging just 2.89 goals per game. They’ve struggled mightily of late as well, managing just 10 goals in their last seven games. Those struggles have been exacerbated by injuries to powerplay man, Mikko Koivu, and defenseman, Matt Dumba, who was leading all NHL defensemen in goals prior to his injury with 12. Look for Toronto to take advantage of the short-handed Wild on home ice. Game time is 2:00 PM ET.
